What exactly is an eSIM? Explainer

The chip that changed travel

An eSIM — short for embedded SIM — is a tiny, programmable chip permanently soldered inside your smartphone, tablet, or smartwatch. Unlike the plastic cards you've been slotting in and out of phones for decades, an eSIM can be reprogrammed wirelessly, in seconds, simply by scanning a QR code.

The technology is governed by the GSMA's Remote SIM Provisioning standard, which means any eSIM-compatible device can talk to any eSIM provider. There's no proprietary lock-in built into the hardware — just a standard chip waiting to receive carrier profiles over the air.

From a traveller's perspective, this is transformative. Land in Tokyo, scan a code, and you're on a local network before your bag arrives at baggage claim. No plastic, no adapter, no hunting for a convenience store.

eSIM Provider Reviews Asia focus · 2026

We reviewed the six most widely-used eSIM providers for Asia travel, evaluating each on Asia coverage breadth, activation ease, real-world data speeds, pricing transparency, and customer support quality. Ratings reflect aggregated Trustpilot, App Store, and independent speed-test data as of mid-2026. No provider has paid for placement.

Airalo Best Coverage est. 2019 · Singapore

World's first eSIM marketplace — 200+ countries, 20 million+ users

Good

Airalo is the go-to for sheer reach. If you're island-hopping from Japan to Vietnam to Indonesia in one trip, no other provider matches its 200+ country catalogue. The app is polished and activation is genuinely fast — typically under 2 minutes. The trade-off is mixed reliability: speeds in Tokyo and Seoul are excellent, but rural areas and smaller island destinations can be patchy. Trustpilot sits at 3.7/5, dragged down by throttling complaints, but App Store reviews are stronger at 4.7/5.

Holafly Unlimited Data est. 2017 · Spain

Unlimited data focus · 16 Asian countries · 50,000+ Trustpilot reviews

Good

Holafly's unlimited data plans are genuinely useful for heavy users — streamers, remote workers, and digital nomads who can't risk hitting a data cap mid-video-call. Coverage spans 16 Asian countries including Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, and Singapore. With a Trustpilot score of 4.6/5 from 50,000+ reviews it's arguably the most trusted name in travel eSIMs. The catch: "unlimited" is subject to a fair-use throttle of around 3–5GB/day at full speed. Also more expensive than data-capped rivals.

Nomad Asia Specialist est. 2018 · Hong Kong

Deepest Asia network options · local SMS for Thailand · multiple regional bundles

Good

Nomad stands out for Asia specifically — it's built from the ground up for the region and offers more granular coverage options than any competitor. You can choose an 8-country SEA plan, a 14- or 21-country APAC plan, or focused mini-region bundles. Unusually, Nomad offers a local Thai phone number with some plans, enabling SMS and calls — a genuine rarity among eSIM providers. Speed tests across Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, and Japan consistently return strong results. Holafly's own review concedes that Nomad has the best Asia coverage.

Saily Budget Pick by NordVPN · est. 2023

19 Asian countries · built-in ad-blocker & web protection · Saily Ultra subscription

Good

Saily is the newest major player — built by NordVPN and launched in 2023 — and it's already disrupting on price. It covers 19 Asian countries (more than Holafly) and bundles privacy features like an ad-blocker and web protection into every plan, making it the privacy-conscious traveller's obvious choice. The Saily Ultra subscription model adds global coverage and travel perks for frequent users. One early caveat: the first activation can take a few hours on some devices, though subsequent uses are reported as instant.

Airhub Heavy Users est. 2020

Asia-Pacific specialist · Eurasia 300GB mega-plan · competitive bulk pricing

Good

Airhub targets data-hungry travellers with one of the market's most unusual offerings: a 300GB Eurasia plan — a volume that has no direct equivalent elsewhere. Asia-Pacific plans start at reasonable entry points and the activation process mirrors industry standards closely. Where Airhub falls short is breadth: no unlimited plans and no phone numbers. It's a solid niche pick for long-haul travellers, remote workers on extended stays, or anyone who needs genuinely large data allocations without breaking into multi-plan purchasing.

Ubigi JP / KR Networks est. 2017 · Transatel / NTT

Backed by NTT/Transatel · 200+ destinations · standout 5G in Japan & Korea

Good

Ubigi is the quietly impressive operator in this list — a brand of Transatel/NTT, one of the world's largest mobile network enablers. That carrier heritage shows in Japan and South Korea, where Ubigi leans on premium local networks to deliver some of the fastest, most reliable speeds you'll find on any travel eSIM, with 5G live across 60+ countries. It covers 200+ destinations, hotspot/tethering is allowed, and its app is clean. The trade-offs: there's no single regional "unlimited Asia" plan (you buy large fixed allowances such as a 60GB Asia pack instead), plans are data-only, and pricing sits above the budget marketplaces. For travellers focused on Japan, Korea and 5G performance, it's a top pick.

WorldSIM Global · Voice + Data est. 2007 · UK

Global SIM & eSIM since 2007 · 190+ countries · UK & US numbers, free incoming calls

Good

WorldSIM is the odd one out in this list — and deliberately so. Where the others sell data, WorldSIM sells a whole mobile identity you can carry from trip to trip. Its eSIM Pro plans bundle voice, SMS and data with a permanent UK (+44) number, an optional US (+1) number, and free incoming calls across 110+ countries, all on plans that carry lifetime validity rather than expiring after a fortnight. Coverage is genuinely global at 190+ countries through 600+ partner networks. The trade-offs are real: it's priced above the budget data marketplaces, there's no regional "unlimited" plan, and the app feels a generation behind newer eSIM-first rivals. But if you want one number that follows you worldwide — and the ability to actually take calls and texts abroad — nothing else here matches it.

YeSIM Budget · Flexible Swiss · est. 2019

200+ destinations · pay-per-day & per-GB plans · free tethering & bundled iOS VPN

Good

YeSIM is one of the cheapest names in travel data, and its plan models are genuinely clever: an Unlimited Day Pass where each 24-hour day only counts once you connect (and unused days stay valid for a year), plus a global Pay & Fly plan billed per GB across 100+ countries. Free tethering and a bundled iOS VPN are nice extras, and a single reusable profile means no new QR code for top-ups. The trade-offs are the Ycoins in-app currency (non-refundable, and an extra step at checkout), a slightly longer setup than Airalo or Saily, and the usual eSIM caveat that coverage quality varies by country.

Everything you need to know before landing at Narita, Haneda or Kansai
Updated Jun 2026

Japan moved faster on eSIM adoption than almost any other Asian country. All three major carriers now support it, activation is instant, and you'll have 4G coverage from Shinjuku to Yakushima. Here's the complete picture for 2026 travellers.

📡 Which carriers support eSIM in Japan?
NTT Docomo, SoftBank, and au by KDDI all support eSIM fully. Rakuten Mobile also supports eSIM with competitive pricing, though its coverage outside major cities is thinner. For tourists, Docomo and SoftBank have the most reliable nationwide reach, particularly on the Shinkansen bullet train network and in mountain national parks.
✈️ Activating before vs. after landing
Japan's eSIM advantage is that you can buy and activate a plan before boarding — no airport kiosk queues. Scan the QR code at home, set the eSIM to activate on arrival, and you'll be connected before your plane touches down. All major airports have airport Wi-Fi if you need to activate on arrival.
What speeds to expect
Japan's 4G LTE network is among the world's fastest. Expect 40–80 Mbps in Tokyo and Osaka, with speeds rarely dropping below 20 Mbps even on the subway. 5G is available in central Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka on Docomo and SoftBank plans. Rural areas typically deliver solid 20–40 Mbps 4G.
💡Pro tip: Japan uses unique frequency bands (Band 18/26 for au/KDDI rural coverage). Most iPhone 13+ and recent Samsung flagships support these for best rural reach.
⚠️Watch out: Most Japan tourist eSIM plans are data-only. For local calls use a VoIP app like WhatsApp or Google Voice over data.
🏆 Best provider for Japan
Airalo's Japan-specific plans score well for activation speed and urban performance. Nomad is a close second with better value on longer stays. Holafly covers Japan on its unlimited plans — check the daily fair-use threshold applies around 3–5GB/day at full speed.
Bottom line
Japan is the most eSIM-friendly destination in Asia. Buy your plan before you fly, activate on landing, and enjoy seamless connectivity from Akihabara to the Okinawa reefs.

Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Koh Samui — staying connected across the Kingdom
Updated Jun 2026

Thailand is one of Southeast Asia's most visited countries and its eSIM infrastructure has kept pace with demand. Coverage across the tourist trail is very good, one provider even offers a local Thai phone number, and activation is fast.

📡 Thai carriers and eSIM support
AIS is Thailand's largest carrier with the best nationwide coverage, including northern highlands and southern islands. DTAC merged with True in 2023 — the combined network is strong in Bangkok and tourist regions. For eSIM, AIS and DTAC/True are the most reliable underlying networks that international providers partner with.
☎️ The phone number advantage
Nomad is currently the only international eSIM provider offering a local Thai phone number with select plans. A local number means you can receive SMS verification codes for banking apps, Grab, LINE, and local services. If spending more than a few days in Thailand, this alone makes Nomad the standout choice.
🏝️ Coverage on the islands
Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Phuket and Koh Lanta all have very good 4G coverage. Koh Tao has decent coverage in the main village but drops off at remote dive sites. AIS-backed plans generally handoff better between island towers than other providers.
🚗Grab and local apps: Grab now accepts international numbers for registration. But some restaurant booking apps still require a Thai SMS number — another reason to consider Nomad's local number option.
🏔️Chiang Mai and the north: Coverage in Chiang Mai city is excellent. Doi Inthanon national park has 4G at the summit. Remote villages in Mae Hong Son province have limited coverage — download offline maps.
🏆 Best provider for Thailand
Nomad wins for Thailand — the local phone number feature and strong AIS partnership make it the top pick. Holafly is best if you need unlimited data. Saily offers the best per-GB value for budget travellers.
Bottom line
Thailand is very well covered for eSIM travellers. Nomad is the standout pick thanks to its local number option — it unlocks Grab, LINE, and local services in a way no other international provider matches.

Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City — connected along one of Asia's great travel routes
Updated Jun 2026

Vietnam's 3,000km north-to-south corridor is one of Asia's most popular routes — and eSIM coverage has matured rapidly. From Hanoi's Old Quarter to the Mekong Delta, you'll find reliable 4G across almost the entire tourist trail.

📡 Vietnamese carriers and eSIM support
Viettel is Vietnam's largest carrier with the best nationwide coverage, including rural highlands and remote coastal areas. Mobifone is strong in cities and tourist hubs. Most international eSIM providers partner with Viettel as their Vietnam backbone — which is why eSIM coverage in Vietnam is generally very good even far from cities.
🗺️ Coverage along the tourist trail
Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, Da Nang, Hue and Ho Chi Minh City all have excellent 4G. Ha Long Bay is a pleasant surprise — cruise ships are within range of mainland towers for most of the bay. The Mekong Delta has variable coverage: strong in Can Tho and main channels, patchier on minor waterways.
💡Activation timing: Buy your Vietnam eSIM before flying. Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat airports have Wi-Fi but it can be slow on arrival. Having your plan pre-loaded means connected the moment you clear immigration.
🚂The Reunification Express: 4G coverage is good for most of the Hanoi to HCMC journey. Main gaps are inside long mountain tunnels. Download content before boarding for overnight sleeper sections.
🏆 Best provider for Vietnam
Airalo's Vietnam plan gets strong reviews for its Viettel backbone and consistent speeds across the tourist trail. Nomad and Saily both cover Vietnam in their Asia regional plans. Holafly's unlimited option is worth considering if you're doing intensive navigation.
Bottom line
Vietnam punches above its weight for eSIM coverage. The Viettel backbone gives international providers a strong foundation — you'll stay connected from the northern mountains to the southern delta.
